Cabo Rojo is a small port town near the Dominican Republic’s border with Haiti. Its main draw is Bahía de las Águilas, a long, undeveloped white-sand beach with turquoise waters, accessible by boat or 4x4 from the port area. Travelers can also visit the Laguna de Oviedo, a hypersaline lagoon home to flamingos and other birdlife, or hike in the Sierra de Bahoruco national park for dry-forest and mountain scenery.

Cabo Rojo–Pedernales refers to the nearby town of Pedernales, a gateway to the Jaragua National Park and the Isla Beata offshore island. From Pedernales, visitors can arrange guided trips to the park’s limestone cliffs, cactus-studded terrain, and snorkeling spots. The town itself offers local markets and a glimpse of everyday life in the border region.
